Testimony of a Maker of Beads



Naklo Danladi Nzomisaki is the founder of ‘Nakcessorize’, a budding bead-making enterprise in Yola, Adamawa State. The young International Relations/French graduate settled for self-employment after job-hunting for a while. In this interview, she spoke on what youth can do to become self-employed.



How long have you been in the beads business?
Since 2013, so it’s four years now.
What was the motivation?
I started after my NYSC when I could not get a job. I got tired of staying at home in Jos. So I woke up one morning and all I could hear in my head was go and learn something. I finished my work at home and told my dad I was going to the market (Terminus market in Jos). When I saw some beads I just knew I had to learn. I spoke with the lady making them and we negotiated on how much I will pay to learn
How much capital did you start the business with?
I paid N10, 000 to learn the basics I needed and some designs because I didn’t know anything about bead-making. The first set of materials I bought cost me N2, 000. I got two beautiful necklaces which I sold to get more money to buy more materials for a new beads work, that’s how the business started.

Besides bead making, what else do you do?
Beside making beads, I train people on how to make them - put stones on gele - and I also have a popcorn business.  Management just has to do with time and setting of my priority. I make popcorn early in the morning which I distribute to some shops nearby before I go to my shop. I taught my cousin, so when she is around she helps me.
What challenges do yo face in this business?
It was not so easy. Going to the market every day to learn and the patronage was low because I had only three major buyers then - my aunties and mum - who also supported me. I started working from home in Jos; balancing that with my house work was not easy.
Finance is another challenge because with beads, you have to be active. New things come out every day and I need to buy materials continuously to get better. 
How many persons have you engaged so far?
I have four permanent staff and six temporary workers. There are also six apprentices in the business.
How do you attract customers?
Through the social media (Facebook and instagram), word of mouth, display in my shop, putting them on myself and also the good testimonies from people I worked for, and recommendations.
Would you jump at the prospect of having a white collar job?
I will not leave bead making because it’s not just a means of income but a passion. However, truthfully speaking, I will take one for now just to help me support my business.
What is your advice to others who would want to trail your business line?

It may not be easy at first, especially financing yourself when you have no one but with prayer and much reliance on God, hard work and honesty pays even if it takes long. Never stop believing and getting better with what you have been blessed with; who knows you may be awarded that grant; but never take a loan – small or a big to jump start your business. Start it with your strength and see what you can get from it. Then understand the market, you may or may not need the loan.
